Villains & Vigilantes
Correct prediction number two! Once again, hollow victory. Woke up somewhere where I don’t know where I am. Don’t have most of my gear. Journal and clothes are pretty much all that are left. It’s very dimly lit and there are eleven others down here. Including Ranköl and Jeremy. Ranköl is not happy, to say the least. Karimaea is nowhere to be seen. Mercy must have had us moved while we were sleeping. From what I can tell we are still on a boat.
Another familiar face was among the other captives. Asked her name. Sarah Lindsey. Suspected something, and a quick check of my journal confirmed. She had once tried out to be in the PHG. Although when she did, she still had two green eyes, not one and one emerald. She is also missing her left hand. She just has a stump about three quarters down her forearm.
We talked for a while about what had happened since we last saw each other a bit over eight months ago. She did try out for the Shilmere guard. But she didn’t have any experience. She then began working as a cheap mercenary. About five months ago she had been working with a trading ship. It mostly dealt in not quite legal goods. She was caught stealing from one of the more archaic tribes and her hand was cut off for it. She usually has an apparatus that connects her shield firmly to her arm. Mercy’s crew took that and the shield.
About two months after that she fell into a pit trap along with fellow shipmate. After an hour or so a snake came into the pit. Thinking that its sight would probably be based largely on movement Sarah stayed still. Her companion didn’t know this and threw a rock at it. Startled, it bit at Sarah, as she was closer, in her left eye. She quickly drew a dagger and killed the snake. Then quickly levered out her eye and severed it. She may have lost her depth perception. But she’s still alive, probably because of what she did. She must have endured a lot of pain.
Apparently Sarah’s reputation grew after that incident. Fair enough. What she did to herself took some serious guts. She has had a fair amount of work offers in the last few months and recently replaced her eye patch with a dark green emerald as a prosthetic because she says that other prosthetics itch and this emerald is more fetching. She took it out and showed me. It’s almost perfectly round. Amazing quality. Mercy must have missed it when she kidnapped Sarah. Sarah had just signed on for the crew when she was taken. Went to bed that night, woke up here. That was about two weeks ago.
While I don’t really condone her choice in line of work, I respect her abilities and courage.
